According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, today (May 6), the Southern region will have showers and thunderstorms in some places.
In the afternoon and evening of May 6, it is forecast that the Southern region will have scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10 - 30mm, locally heavy rain over 50mm.
From the afternoon of May 7 to May 8, the Northern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will have rain, moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms with rainfall of 20 - 40mm, locally heavy to very heavy rain over 100mm.
The meteorological agency warns that in thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. The level of natural disaster risk due to tornadoes, lightning, hail is level 1.
Rainstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind can affect agricultural production, causing trees to fall, damage to houses, traffic works, and infrastructure. Localized heavy rains are likely to cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.
Regarding the rainfall trend in May, the total rainfall nationwide is generally lower than the multi-year average by 15 - 30%; especially in the Northeast and South regions, it is generally approximately equal to the multi-year average of the same period.
Nationwide, there is a possibility of widespread showers and thunderstorms, with rain concentrated more in the Northern region.
The southwest monsoon in the South is likely to operate from about the second half of May, causing increased showers and thunderstorms in the Central Highlands and Southern regions. Therefore, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern regions appears later than the average of many years.
According to multi-year average data, the rainy season in the Central Highlands region is around the last week of April, the first week of May; in the Southern region it is around the first half of May.
