The event marks the official connection of the entire North - South expressway in the East, completing the strategic goals according to the Resolution of the National Assembly and the direction of the Government and the Prime Minister.
With the goal of synchronously investing in the North - South expressway in the East, strengthening connectivity with economic and political centers, key economic zones and industrial parks, especially key economic regions of the country, the National Assembly approved the investment policy for the North - South expressway construction project in the East for the period 2021 - 2025 in Resolution No. 44/2022/QH15 dated January 11, 2022.
The project consists of 12 component projects, with a total length of about 729 km, including component projects for the Can Tho - Hau Giang section and the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section.
After nearly three years of construction with high determination, promoting the spirit of "overcoming the sun, overcoming the rain", "3 shifts" and effectively applying the special mechanisms of the National Assembly and the Government, the two component projects have met the conditions for inauguration.
The Can Tho - Hau Giang component project has completed all the main expressway items that are eligible for inauguration on December 19, 2025 and will be officially put into operation from 9:00 a.m. on December 20, 2025.
The Hau Giang - Ca Mau component project has also met the technical traffic requirements on December 19, 2025; continue to complete the remaining items to complete the entire main expressway and put it into official operation from 9:00 a.m. on December 31, 2025.
Hau Giang - Ca Mau component project: 17,152.65 billion VND. Total length of the entire expressway: 110.87 km, of which the length passes through the provinces: Can Tho (64.25 km), An Giang (17.05 km), Ca Mau (29.573 km).
The starting point of the project is at Km15+350 intersecting with the route connecting Nam Song Hau - National Highway 1, in Cai Rang ward, Can Tho city, connecting with the Can Tho 2 Bridge Project (planned) and the end point is at Km126+223 intersecting with the Southern Coastal Corridor road in Ho Thi Ky commune, Ca Mau province.
The expressway phase is to invest in 4 lanes with a floor width of 17m; The complete phase of 4 lanes with a floor width of 24.75m. Design speed 100km/h. The projects are built synchronously such as non-stop toll stations, smart transportation systems (TS).
The inauguration and opening of the Can Tho - Hau Giang Component Project and the opening of the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section have especially important socio-economic significance, creating strong development momentum for the Mekong Delta region.
The project contributes to the formation of a high-speed traffic axis, strengthening regional linkages, closely connecting economic centers, seaports and key industrial parks, especially connecting Can Tho city - the regional center with the southernmost tip of the Fatherland.
At the same time, the expressway helps shorten transportation time, reduce logistics costs for exported goods, agricultural products, and seafood, thereby improving the competitiveness of businesses in the region.
In addition, the project also opens up new development space for tourism, while enhancing the ability to ensure national defense, security, and maintain stability in the Southwest region.
