According to the patient's family, for the past 14 days, the patient has not left the locality. 3 days before going to the doctor, the patient had a sore throat, and taking medicine at home did not help.
At about 2:00 p.m. on August 4, the patient came to Dr. Ha Thi Phuc's obstetrics clinic with symptoms of sore throat, difficulty swallowing, red and congested throat mucosa, tonsils on both sides were swollen and red, with many white pseudomembranes attached. on the surface of the tonsils and pharynx, was diagnosed with suspected diphtheria and was recommended to be transferred to the District General Hospital for monitoring and treatment.
Here, the patient was diagnosed with acute exacerbation of chronic tonsillitis with pseudomembranous membrane, diphtheria had not been ruled out and was transferred to the Department of Tropical Diseases, Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital on the same day for isolation and treatment.
The patient's examination results showed the following symptoms: Sore throat, no fever, no cough, no difficulty breathing; The uvula and back of the throat have many pseudomembranes that are ivory white, shiny, tough, and tightly adherent; results of staining and imaging of diphtheria bacteria; culture results (+). The patient was diagnosed with diphtheria/8 months gestation.
During the day, the surveillance team discovered 4 more cases of close contact with patients with symptoms of sore throat and 15 cases of close contact (F1) with patients.
