On the evening of February 6 (Vietnam time), defender Marcelo announced his retirement at the age of 36 in a video posted on social media, ending 19 years of professional football.
He is one of the most successful players in terms of number of titles, including 5 Champions League titles and 6 La Liga titles.
"My football career ends here but I still have a lot to contribute to football," Marcelo shared in a video recording the highlights of his career.
Marcelo left Real Madrid in 2022 and had a brief spell with Greek club Olympiacos. He then returned to his native Brazil and joined Fluminense, helping them lift the Copa Libertadores in 2023. He left the club in November 2024 after falling out with head coach Mano Menezes.
Marcelo joined Madrid from Fluminense in January 2007 at the age of 18 and spent 15 seasons with the Royal team.
He left the Bernabeu as the club's most decorated player in its 120-year history with 25 trophies - but that has now been surpassed by Nacho, Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal.
In the national team, Marcelo has 58 matches for Brazil, scoring 6 goals.
