After sacking 250 staff and stripping former manager Sir Alex Ferguson of his ambassadorial role, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now turning his attention to Manchester United's overpaid and underperforming squad.
Ratcliffe wants to cut around £1m a week from the Red Devils' huge wage bill as they need to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
In that context, Man United will prioritize the transfer of three players - Marcus Rashford on £325,000/week, Casemiro on £350,000/week and Antony on £200,000/week. Removing these three players, whether on permanent contracts or on loan, is an opportunity for Man United to free up the wage bill.
Especially if the Red Devils can sell Rashford for the £45m they expect. As an academy graduate, the proceeds from selling Rashford will be counted as pure profit under PSR.
With Man United reportedly ready to make a move for rising young stars like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, no one in manager Ruben Amorim's squad can consider themselves safe.
According to British media, only an "unreasonable" offer would make Man United sell Mainoo. Meanwhile, Garnacho is considered one of the most exciting young talents at Old Trafford. However, the level of ruthlessness of the upcoming squad overhaul at Man United is still extremely worth waiting for.
United's untouchables include captain Bruno Fernandes, Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo. Mainoo could also join the list if progress is made on a new contract. Another player who has impressed under Amorim is Diogo Dalot, who is also a player United would like to keep.
Manuel Ugarte is also unlikely to be sold as he has found form after a difficult start. But the rest of the United squad is up for sale, if the price is right. With the Red Devils having performed so poorly this season, there are few players Amorim can trust.
Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof are out of contract this summer and are unlikely to be renewed. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw's fitness and injury problems could see him sold to make room for a new left-back.
Rasmus Hojlund is also on the market as Amorim look to sign a more reliable and effective No.9. Viktor Gyokeres - Amorim's former player at Sporting - has emerged as a top target.
There is a certain irony in the fact that United are open to offers for almost their entire squad just days after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool, their best performance of the season, and Amorim knows he must overhaul his squad if he is to return United to their glory days.
The problem with Man United is that they have a group of average players with very high wages. Therefore, it is very difficult for another team to accept to recruit those players.
