Amad Diallo equalised in the 80th minute to end Manchester United's three-game losing streak and seal a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. The Red Devils also kept the Reds in the Premier League title race.
Lisandro Martinez put Man United ahead early in the second half. However, Cody Gakpo's equaliser and Mohamed Salah's penalty helped Liverpool turn the game around. At that point, Man United manager Ruben Amorim was visibly worried.
In the end, winger Amad helped Man United get a valuable point when he successfully finished after Alejandro Garnacho's cross.
In a match that looked set to be postponed due to heavy snowfall in northern England, the Red Devils came close to winning in the final minutes. Unfortunately, Harry Maguire shot over the bar from close range in stoppage time. For Liverpool, the draw was not a disaster as they maintained their position at the top of the table.
Man United were just missing a precise strike from Maguire to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over Liverpool at Anfield. But despite the disappointment of not being able to take all three points, it was a victory in every aspect for Amorim.
Had Maguire scored from Joshua Zirkzee's cross in the 97th minute, it would have been United's first win at Anfield since 2016. However, they did manage a draw that Amorim could have used as a springboard.
Amorim admitted before the game that United's players were scared of the ball and even said the club could be fighting for relegation with their poor form.
However, the Red Devils were excellent against Liverpool, and although there are still obvious issues to address, Amorim will be boosted by the performances of his back three, alongside the partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte in midfield.
On the wings, defenders Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui were both excellent and played a key role in the final result. Overall, the unity and spirit shown by Amorim's players will be a huge positive for the coach.
After taking the lead and then losing it, Man United showed real fighting spirit to get a point back, maybe even a win. This result could be a turning point for Amorim's team, although more time is needed to verify.
"We had some good games last month, but then we went down. What we need is consistency. We talked about it after the win against Man City but it's still the same. The great thing is that tomorrow we will go back to training and have to maintain the same level of mentality," Amorim said after the draw with Liverpool.
