7 Ways to Reduce Cavities and Prevent Gum Problems

Tooth decay can lead to sore gums, bad breath and many other problems if not treated promptly.

1. Use toothpaste containing fluoride

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent and control tooth decay. To clean all tooth surfaces, make sure to brush for at least 2 minutes and use the correct technique.

To improve tooth enamel, use a fluoride toothpaste. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste can help prevent tooth decay and help remineralize tooth enamel.

2. Floss daily

Brushing alone cannot remove all the food particles and plaque that can build up between your teeth. Flossing is important to remove stubborn food particles and bacteria that can hide between your teeth, which can lead to cavities.

3. Use sugar-free gum

Chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production. Saliva is the mouth's natural defense against tooth decay, helping to wash away food particles and neutralize acids. Choose sugar-free gum that contains xylitol, a natural sweetener that bacteria cannot digest, which reduces their ability to produce harmful acids.

4. Drink enough water

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is also essential for maintaining good oral health. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, keeps your mouth moist, and promotes saliva production. It can also dilute acids and sugars in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay.

5. Get more vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for overall health, including dental health. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphate, two minerals essential for maintaining strong teeth and bones. A vitamin D deficiency can lead to weak tooth enamel and a higher risk of cavities.

6. Avoid sugary foods

Foods high in sugar and acid are the main culprits behind tooth decay. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, creating acids that erode tooth enamel. Try to cut back on candy, soda, and other sugary snacks.

Be mindful of acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits, wine, and carbonated drinks. If you do eat them, rinse your mouth with water afterward or brush your teeth 30 minutes later to protect your tooth enamel.

7. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient practice that is now becoming very popular among young people. Swish coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes before spitting it out. This method helps to remove bacteria and improve oral hygiene.

While it's no substitute for brushing and flossing, oil pulling can be a beneficial addition to your oral care routine, especially when it comes to reducing cavity-causing bacteria.
