Effects on skin health
Dr. Karuna Malhotra, a cosmetic surgeon at Dr Karuna Dermatology Clinic (India), said that unlike perishable items such as food, soap does not really spoil over time, but its effectiveness can decrease.
Using expired soap can cause skin problems. Over time, soap may lose its effectiveness, especially its antibacterial properties.
The ingredients of soap can be broken down, leading to changes in pH, skin irritation, dryness or allergic reactions, especially for people with sensitive skin.
"Furthermore, expired products can contain bacteria or fungi, increasing the risk of infection," Dr. Malhotra warned.
If stored properly, soap can still be effective after expiration. However, the scent may fade over time.
How to determine if the soap is out of date?
To know if the soap is expired, Dr. Malhotra recommends paying attention to signs such as discoloration and loss of smell.
If the soap shows signs of fatigue, it is best to get rid of it. To minimize the risk, use mild, unscented soap, and remove expired products to protect the skin.
For people who are susceptible to skin diseases such as fungal infections or dry skin, avoiding using old or damaged products becomes especially important.
How to store soap properly
Proper storage of soap can help prolong the life of the product. Dr. Malhotra recommends keeping the soap in a dry, moist place to prevent mold growth.
