According to information published by Techcrunch, a Waymo robotaxi drove into a flooded road area in Atlanta (USA) and was trapped for about 1 hour before being removed from the scene.
After the incident, Waymo said it had temporarily suspended operations in Atlanta and San Antonio to assess the bad weather system.
The company also confirmed to Bloomberg that services in Dallas and Houston were also suspended due to heavy rain in Texas.
Waymo said safety is still the top priority and the company is continuing to improve the flood area identification system.
Previously, Waymo released a software update to limit vehicles entering high-speed flooded areas. However, the incident in Atlanta shows that these measures are still not effective enough.
According to Waymo, heavy rainfall in Atlanta occurred too quickly before the US meteorological agency issued a flash flood warning, making it difficult for the system to respond in time.
