Ultra-processed foods affect biological age
Researchers at the Neuromed Mediterranean Neurological Institute, IRCCS (Italy) have found that people who consume a lot of ultra-processed foods (UPF) show signs of faster biological aging than those who eat less of these processed food products.
The study examined more than 22,000 adults in the Molise region of Italy and was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Scientists said that participants whose diets contained the highest proportion of UPF (more than 14% of total food intake by weight) had significantly faster rates of biological aging than those who ate less UPF (accelerated aging for about 4 months of UPF consumption).
For people who regularly eat ultra-processed foods like frozen pizza for years or decades, the risk of premature aging and health effects is real.
Why Frozen Pizza Affects the Aging Process
High in Unhealthy Fats: Frozen pizzas often contain trans fats or saturated fats. Trans fats can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease good cholesterol (HDL), leading to an increased risk of heart disease. Consuming a lot of unhealthy fats can increase inflammation in the body, contributing to the aging of the skin and body tissues.
Preservatives and Additives: Frozen pizzas often contain preservatives, artificial flavors, and other additives to increase shelf life and improve flavor. Some of these additives can increase oxidative stress in the body, which can damage cells and contribute to aging.
High in salt: Frozen pizzas often contain high amounts of salt, which can cause water retention and increase blood pressure. High salt intake can also reduce skin elasticity, making it more prone to wrinkling and aging.
High in sugar and starch: Many frozen pizzas have crusts and sauces that are high in refined starches and sugars. Consuming too much sugar can spike insulin levels and cause “glycation” (a chemical reaction between sugar and protein), which damages the collagen and elastin in your skin, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkling.
Nutritional Deficiency: Frozen pizza is often lacking in important nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can reduce the ability to fight free radicals and protect cells from damage, thereby affecting the aging process.
