Gia Lai is implementing an investment plan to build Tam Quan smart fishing port combined with a storm shelter for fishing vessels to modernize fisheries infrastructure, improve the value of the tuna chain and meet international standards.
According to VNA, Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh said that the project is one of the important solutions for the locality to achieve the average GDP growth target for the period 2026 - 2030 from 10% or more according to the Resolution of the 14th Party Congress.
Tam Quan fishing port will apply digital technology, automation and data analysis in fishing vessel management, output, food safety, traceability and logistics services. The province also invests in an international standard tuna auction center, a cold logistics center at the port; develops Tam Quan fishing vessel and aquatic mechanical repair center in Hoai Nhon Bac ward; and promotes public-private partnerships to invest in ice and fuel supply networks at major ports.
According to the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project of Gia Lai province for the period 2026 - 2030, orientation to 2050, the total investment capital of the project is 4,270 billion VND. Of which, the central budget is 2,550 billion VND, the provincial budget is 670 billion VND, and the remaining 1,050 billion VND is mobilized from other economic sectors.
The project aims to build a specialized tuna port at the regional level, increasing the proportion of tuna meeting export standards to 30 - 35% by 2030 and 50 - 60% by 2050.
Tam Quan fishing port will deploy an electronic traceability system (e-CDT), electronic exploitation logbook, VMS management and AI, IoT, Blockchain applications. Data is interconnected with border guards, fisheries surveillance and IUU control agencies to increase transparency, meet international standards and support the removal of the EU "yellow card".
The province also plans to build a trading floor and tuna auction center in a smart fishing port to connect supply and demand and increase commercial value. Functional agencies will study the electronic seafood auction market model in Japan, Spain, and Norway to choose appropriate technology and management solutions.
Currently, Gia Lai has 3 fishing ports including Quy Nhon fishing port, De Gi fishing port and Tam Quan fishing port with a loading capacity of 100,000 tons/year. The whole province has 3 storm shelter anchorage areas at Thi Nai lagoon, De Gi lagoon and Tam Quan, with a capacity of about 3,800 ships.
However, many port infrastructure items have deteriorated, the rate of mechanization is low, loading and unloading and sorting activities still depend on manual labor, and there is no synchronous digitalization system. Anchorage areas are also seriously silted up, channels are narrow, posing potential dangers when there are large waves or low tides.
