Thousands of flowers light up the Da River reservoir in Dien Bien

Dien Bien - Thousands of flower lanterns were thrown into the lake to commemorate the victims of the historic flash flood more than 30 years ago in Muong Lay town.

On the evening of April 5, more than 1,000 flower lanterns were released into Son La hydroelectric reservoir (Muong Lay town, Dien Bien province) creating a sparkling, magical scene.

This is one of the activities in the Super Prayer Ceremony for the victims of the historic flash flood in Dien Bien. The program was organized by the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Dien Bien province in coordination with Muong Lay town.

This is an activity within the Super Prayer Ceremony - Commemorating the death anniversary of compatriots in the flash flood in 1990, 1996 in Lai Chau town, Lai Chau province (old), now Muong Lay town.

The flowerponts also convey dreams and hopes for a brighter and better future.

More than 30 years ago, the historic flash flood that occurred at the end of June 1990 in Lai Chau town, Lai Chau province (old) took the lives of 72 people and injured 251 people. In 1996, another flash flood killed two people.

The flower lantern release ceremony on the Da River reservoir area not only demonstrates the tradition of drinking water reminiscent of the good sources of the nation but is also an opportunity to educate the younger generation about the great sacrifice and loss in natural disasters.

Venerable Thich Nhuan Thanh - Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Bien province - said that when releasing flower lanterns, everyone became willing to pray for peace and happiness for themselves, their families and all creatures.
