According to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), localities affected by thunderstorms, hail, and strong gusts of wind have mobilized forces to support people to overcome the consequences, stabilize production and life; and at the same time visit the injured, continue to review and statistically assess damage.
According to VNA, as of 9 am on May 4, thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, and hail occurred in Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Hanoi provinces, injuring 12 people (Thai Nguyen 5, Tuyen Quang 7); 2,318 houses had their roofs blown off (Dien Bien 53, Thai Nguyen 1. 382, Cao Bang 5, Lao Cai 116, Phu Tho 376, Tuyen Quang 159, Ha Tinh 48, Nghe An 193).
Natural disasters also caused damage to 8,259.4ha of rice and crops (Dien Bien 771ha, Thai Nguyen 764ha, Lao Cai 116ha, Hanoi 307ha, Tuyen Quang 342ha, Ha Tinh 5, 827.4ha, Nghe An 132ha); 16 schools had their roofs blown off (Thai Nguyen 14, Tuyen Quang 2); 6 cultural houses were damaged (Thai Nguyen 4, Phu Tho 1, Nghe An 1); 75 power poles were broken and fallen (Cao Bang 2, Thai Nguyen 63, Tuyen Quang 7, Ha Tinh 3); 50m of embankment was eroded (Phu Tho); 11 livestock facilities had their roofs blown off (Ha Tinh).
Notably, in Nhan Hoa commune (Nghe An), lightning hit the sugarcane seed storage tank of a factory, causing about 20,000 tons of sugarcane seed to spill out, causing damage of about 7-8 billion VND. In Thanh Binh Tho commune (Nghe An), Cay Mit bridge across the Con River is about 30cm offset from the bridge abutment.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, due to the influence of cold air, on May 4, the southern Red River Delta region, from Thanh Hoa to Hue City, will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, rainfall of 10 - 30mm, locally over 50mm.
From May 5 - 13, the Northern region and Thanh Hoa will have showers and thunderstorms in some places; around September 8 - 9, there will be showers, scattered thunderstorms, locally heavy rain. The area from Nghe An to Hue in the evening and night will have showers, thunderstorms in some places; from the evening of September 8 - 9, there will be showers, scattered thunderstorms, locally heavy rain. Other areas will have showers, thunderstorms in some places; especially the Southern Central Highlands and Southern region from July 5 - 7, there will be showers, scattered thunderstorms, locally heavy rain.
The above areas should be wary of the possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms," Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, Deputy Head of the Weather Forecast Department of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, noted.
To proactively respond, the national civil defense steering committee requests localities to closely monitor forecast bulletins, promptly inform local authorities and people; be ready with local forces to support overcoming consequences.
