Nghe An - Thanks to the effective implementation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the poverty rate in Nghe An province has decreased rapidly.

On January 3rd, information from the People's Committee of Nghe An province said that in the period 2021-2025, the implementation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction in the province achieved many important results, contributing to improving people's lives, especially in mountainous areas and ethnic minority areas.

The total capital for implementing the Program in the 2021-2025 period is more than 2,072 billion VND. Leadership and direction work is deployed synchronously from the province to the grassroots level, promptly consolidating the Steering Committees of national target programs at all levels, ensuring that the Program is implemented continuously and without interruption, even during the period when the province operates the 2-level local government model from July 1, 2025.

According to updated data, the provincial poverty rate decreased from 7.8% in 2021 to 4.16% in 2024 and is estimated at 3.13% by the end of 2025. On average, the poverty rate decreased by 1.16% per year, of which the mountainous region decreased by an average of 2.15% per year, achieving the Program's goals. Many localities have poverty reduction rates higher than the general average, contributing to gradually narrowing the development gap between mountainous and plain areas.

Along with poverty reduction in income, people's access to basic social services has improved significantly. Many highland villages previously lacked electricity, water, and congested traffic, now have synchronous basic infrastructure, concrete roads to villages, and students can go to school more conveniently, and people have access to health services and more complete information.

In the period 2021-2025, the Program has invested in building 43 socio-economic infrastructure projects, mainly in the fields of transportation, irrigation, education and culture. Along with that, 177 livelihood models and 90 production development projects in the agricultural sector have been implemented, attracting more than 11,000 poor households, near-poor households and newly escaped households to participate, contributing to creating jobs and increasing income for people.

Poverty reduction policies are continuing to be fully and promptly implemented. Millions of poor, near-poor people and policy beneficiaries are issued health insurance cards; hundreds of thousands of students are exempted and reduced tuition fees, supporting tuition fees; many poor households are supported with electricity bills, legal aid and medical examination and treatment. Social policy credit capital increases over the years, contributing to creating livelihoods, ensuring social security and improving the quality of life for people.

Nghe An province has made efforts to maintain the effectiveness of the Program, reorganize the apparatus, and transfer tasks from the district level to the commune level. Projects and activities being implemented at the grassroots level continue to be maintained, minimizing disruptions in the implementation process.

Talking to reporters, the leader of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religious Affairs of Nghe An province said that the results of sustainable poverty reduction in the past time show the drastic involvement of the entire political system, especially in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

According to the Department's leaders, poverty reduction in the coming period needs to focus on sustainability, limiting re-poverty and arising poverty, especially in the context of complex natural disasters and climate change.

Poverty reduction is not only immediate support but must be linked to creating stable livelihoods, suitable to the conditions of each region, each target group, and at the same time improving the people's ability to rise up," the leader of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religious Affairs of Nghe An province emphasized, and said that continuing to improve mechanisms, increase decentralization to grassroots levels and replicate effective poverty reduction models will be an important direction for Nghe An to implement the sustainable poverty reduction goal in the period 2026-2030.
