The imprint of Mật tông Buddhism in ancient Hanoi pagoda

QUỲNH MAI |

The ancient Thang Nghiem pagoda left many impressions with its architecture combining traditional features and the mysterious colors of Buddhism.

Thang Nghiem Pagoda (also known as Thang Nghiem Secret Institute) is a special destination when it has a different appearance from the space of Bac Bo Pagoda. Not only is it old, but it is also prominent for the intersection of traditional architecture and colorful Mật tông style.

The pagoda is located about 15km south of the center of Hanoi, belonging to Binh Minh commune, in the relic complex commonly known as Khuc Thuy Pagoda. Legend has it that from the 2nd - 3rd centuries, Indian monks came to preach, initially it was just a small tower to worship Buddha's relics, which is popularly known as "Ma But". In 1010, under Ly Thai To's reign, the pagoda was officially built and has been renamed many times through dynasties. Currently, the relic still preserves 34 valuable imperial decrees.

The pagoda space is associated with many famous monks such as Khuong Viet, Van Hanh and according to documents stored at the pagoda, this place is also a place to nurture national hero Tran Hung Dao. After many historical upheavals, the pagoda deteriorated before being restored, especially from 1997, creating a new face like today.

The most noticeable point is the architectural color. The laterite walls combined with yellow, red, and brown tones create a brilliant feeling, different from the familiar contemplative look. However, the curved tiled roof, three-entrance gate and carved wooden columns still retain the spirit of Vietnamese architecture, creating a harmonious harmony.

Inside the Tam Bao Palace are lacquered jackfruit wood statues in the Northern style, surrounded by hundreds of small gold-plated Buddha statues. In the yard, a 10-ton, 5-meter-high bronze Shakyamuni Buddha statue placed in the middle of a lake becomes a highlight. The space is also deeply imprinted with the Mật tông with stupas, kinh luân and five-colored flags - symbols associated with the belief in peace and good energy.

Today, the pagoda is not only a place for religious activities but also attracts many young people to come. Amidst the modern pace of life, this place brings a moment of silence to both admire the strange beauty and find peace of mind.
