New low pressure officially becomes a storm, strong winds are about to reach super typhoon level

Dương Đông |

The low pressure that just formed on the night of February 20 quickly strengthened into a new storm over the Indian Ocean.

According to the latest storm news from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), an official low pressure has strengthened into Typhoon Horacio.

The strongest wind in the area near the center increased rapidly from 65 km/h on February 20 to 175 km/h - approaching super typhoon level (level 16, 184 - 201km/h), gusting 215 km/h in the afternoon of February 23.

The eye of the storm is currently about 970 km east of Port Louis (Mauritius) and has moved southwest at a speed of about 19 km/h in the past 6 hours.

The maximum wave height recorded is up to 11.6 m, showing that the affected sea area is very rough.

In the latest storm forecast bulletin, Horacio is expected to continue moving on a curved trajectory gradually southward in the next 12-24 hours.

After that, the storm tends to circle through the western edge of the high pressure and shift southeast in the next few days before possibly changing direction to the southwest.

Notably, Hurricane Horacio has intensified rapidly in the past 12 hours.

Weather forecasts show that the storm is likely to continue to strengthen and may reach a maximum of about 215-220 km/h in the next 12 hours - reaching super typhoon level.

After this period, the storm gradually weakens. In the next 36 hours, Hurricane Horacio is expected to gradually decrease in intensity. By about 2 days later, the weakening process may occur faster due to the intrusion of dry air and the storm moving over cool waters below 26 degrees C.

Around the 4th day of the forecast cycle, the storm began to weaken into a tropical depression.

Recommendations for tourists

Tourists planning to go to Mauritius or travel on sea routes in the southwest Indian Ocean need to closely monitor the latest storm and weather forecasts. High waves and strong winds offshore can affect ship and air operations.

Sea tourism, diving, and offshore fishing activities should be limited in the coming days. Tourists staying on the island need to update information from local authorities and travel agencies, and prepare flexible plans for their itinerary if bad weather increases.

Weather forecast for the sea and land in Vietnam

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from now until March 20, 2026, it is unlikely that tropical depressions or storms will appear in the East Sea. The average for many years is 0.1 storms and will not make landfall.

However, cold air will continue to operate and tend to move eastward; severe cold weather mainly occurs in the mountainous and midland areas of the North; phenomenons of light rain, drizzle and fog will appear in the Northeast and North Central regions, equivalent to the multi-year average.

Cold air can cause strong winds and big waves to affect ships and boats.

Widespread rain may occur in provinces and cities from Ha Tinh to Hue City and the South Central Coast; especially the Southern region may experience unseasonal rain.

Hot weather continues to appear in the Southeast region, locally in the Southwest region during the forecast period.
