A tropical depression off the coast of Queensland (Australia) is about to officially strengthen into a storm around dawn on March 5.

According to the latest low pressure news from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), tropical depression 24P (Tropical Low 29U) is highly likely to strengthen into a tropical storm on March 5.

Currently, the center of the tropical depression is located about 593 km east - northeast of Cairns (Australia). In the past 6 hours, the tropical depression has moved in a south - southwest direction at a speed of about 4 km/h. The maximum high wave recorded is about 4.6 m.

Forecast for the next 3 days, the tropical depression will move in a southwest direction, along the northern edge of the subtropical high pressure located in central Australia.

The tropical depression is forecast to become a storm, which may make landfall in the southern Cairns area within the next 48 hours.

After making landfall, the storm is forecast to weaken rapidly into a low pressure area due to interaction with terrain when going deep inland and may dissipate in about 3 days.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) noted that tropical storms often have complex trajectories and are difficult to predict accurately. According to the BoM's extreme rain scenario, coastal areas could receive up to 350 mm of rain before the end of the week, increasing the risk of flooding and flash floods.

Tourists planning to visit the North Queensland area, especially around Cairns in the next 2-3 days, need to closely monitor official weather forecasts and storm forecasts. Heavy rain, rough seas and strong winds can affect sea tourism and coastal traffic.

Meanwhile, the sea weather in Vietnam also has strong winds and big waves in some areas on March 5, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Sea area north of the Northern East Sea area: Northeast wind strong at level 6, gusts at level 7-8; especially sea area northeast at times level 7, gusts at level 8-9, strong sea waves. Sea waves 2.0-4.0m high. Day winds tend to gradually decrease.

Sea area with thunderstorms: on the night of March 4 and March 5, the sea area from South Quang Tri to Quang Ngai will have scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

On the night of March 5, the sea area east of the Northern East Sea area had strong Northeast winds at level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting at level 7-8, rough seas; waves 2.0-4.0m high.

All ships operating in the above areas are at high risk of being affected by strong winds and large waves.
