Storm No. 4 approaches Vietnam's mainland, heavy rain over 600 mm

Storm No. 4 is moving slowly in the East Sea, causing widespread heavy rain, in some places over 600 mm in the mainland area of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as of 1:00 PM today, August 22, the center of storm No. 4 is located at about 21.0 degrees North latitude - 108.0 degrees East longitude, over the sea area of Quang Ninh-Hai Phong, about 100km north of Bach Long Vi special zone. The strongest wind near the center of the storm reaches level 8 (62-74km/h), gusting at level 10.

Forecast for the next 3 hours, the storm will move little or slowly in the South direction, at a speed of about 5km/h.

Due to the impact of the storm, strong winds of level 8 and gusts of level 9 were recorded in Bach Long Vi special zone; Co To special zone had strong winds of level 6 and gusts of level 9. Mong Cai station recorded strong winds of level 7 and gusts of level 9; Uong Bi had strong winds of level 7 and Phu Lien had strong winds of level 6 and gusts of level 7.

It is forecasted that by 10:00 AM on August 23rd, the storm will move in a southern direction at a speed of about 3 km/h. The storm's center will be located at about 20.5 degrees North latitude - 107.9 degrees East longitude, in the sea area north of Bach Long Vi special zone, about 115 km east of Hai Phong. The storm's intensity will maintain at level 8, gusting at level 10.

By 10:00 AM on August 24, the storm is likely to move in a Southeast-east direction at a speed of about 3 km/h, the storm center is located at about 20.1 degrees North latitude - 108.7 degrees East longitude, over the Northern Gulf of Tonkin, about 110 km east of Bach Long Vi special zone.

From 72 to 120 hours later, the storm is likely to change direction and move in a North-Northeast direction at a speed of about 5 km/h and gradually weaken into a tropical depression.

At sea, the Gulf of Tonkin, coastal sea areas of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong have strong winds of level 6-7, near the storm center passing through strong level 8, gusts of level 10; sea waves are 2-4 m high, strong sea waves. Fishing boats, transport ships, tourist boats, aquaculture cages and coastal works are at risk of being affected.

In the coastal mainland of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, strong winds of level 6-7, gusts of level 8-9 may blow off roofs, damage temporary structures, break down green trees, billboards, affecting electricity and traffic systems.

Due to the impact of the storm, from August 22 to the night of August 24, the Northeast, the South of Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces will have common rain of 100-200 mm, locally over 400 mm.

In Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, the common rainfall is 250-350 mm, locally over 600 mm. Lang Son and Bac Ninh have common rainfall of 200-300 mm, locally over 500 mm. Rain developments are likely to continue after the night of August 24.

Heavy rain may cause flooding in urban areas, industrial parks and low-lying areas, while increasing the risk of floods on small rivers and streams, flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

Before the developments of storm No. 4, people and tourists in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and affected areas need to proactively update forecast information, limit movement when the weather is bad. In particular, do not go to sea or participate in tourism and sea entertainment activities during storms and heavy rains.
