According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), as of the evening of July 8, the center of super typhoon Ba Vi was located about 1,195 km south-southeast of Kadena Air Base on Okinawa Island (Japan). In the past 6 hours, the typhoon has moved in a westerly direction at a speed of about 20 km/h.
The strongest wind near the super typhoon center reaches 250 km/h. The maximum wave height reaches about 15.2 m.
JTWC forecasts that in the next 12 hours, Super Typhoon Ba Vi will change direction to the Northwest. In the next 60 to 72 hours, the storm's center will pass through the Yaeyama Islands of Japan before moving towards the east coast of China.
JTWC forecasts that the super typhoon will make landfall in the eastern coastal area of China after about 84 hours.
In terms of intensity, JTWC predicts super typhoon Ba Vi will continue to weaken steadily in the next 24 hours and become a fierce typhoon. After making landfall in mainland China, the impact of the terrain will cause the typhoon's circulation to quickly weaken to the threshold of a typhoon.
It is expected that Super Typhoon Ba Vi will enter the Southeast Sea of China around Friday before making landfall in coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces this weekend. The super typhoon brings heavy rain to many areas in eastern, central and northern China.
JTWC warns that this is still a very dangerous weather system, which can cause strong gusts of wind, heavy rain, storm surges, rough seas, landslides and flash floods in areas on the path of the storm.
People and tourists in the Yaeyama Islands (Japan), the coastal area of eastern China, especially Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, need to closely monitor weather forecasts. Follow the instructions of functional agencies, limit going out to sea or moving to coastal areas during the storm's impact to ensure safety.
