Lung Po is the name of a stream in Bat Xat district, dividing the watershed between Vietnam and China. Lung Po stream flows into the Red River at milestone 92, which is the first point where the Red River flows into Vietnam.
The place name Lung Po (in A Mu Sung commune, Bat Xat district) is not only a marker where the mother river flows into Vietnam to form the Red River civilization, but also preserves the silent history of the border region, where A Mu Sung border soldiers fought and died to protect the Fatherland.
To commemorate the silent feats and sacrifices of loyal soldiers, the youth project “Lung Po Flagpole - where the Red River flows into Vietnam”, funded by socialized sources, was started and inaugurated in 2017 at the location of border marker 92.
The project is built on an area of 2,100 m2, the main flagpole is 31.43 m high, symbolizing Fansipan peak at 3,143 m high, the flag has an area of 25 m2 symbolizing 25 ethnic groups in Lao Cai.
Lung Po flagpole has become a symbol of the will, volunteer spirit and determination of Lao Cai youth to participate in building their homeland, continuing the fine tradition of the nation in building and defending the Fatherland.
In 2019, Lao Cai province established a development plan to build Lung Po area into an eco-tourism, commercial service, and socio-cultural area with the unique identity of the land "Where the Red River flows into Vietnam".
This will create momentum to promote the structural shift in border gate economic development in accordance with the orientation of the project to expand the border gate economic zone of Lao Cai province.
Arriving in Lung Po in early December, it was noted that the transportation system leading to this tourist destination was synchronized and convenient. Standing on top of Lung Po flagpole, visitors can look out to see the mountain and forest scenery, and especially the source of the Red River in Vietnam.
Speaking to Lao Dong, Chairman of the People's Committee of A Mu Sung Commune, Lu A Hoa, said: "Lung Po is under the management of the commune. This area is where the Red River begins to flow into Vietnam, and has great potential for developing tourism activities. Therefore, this place has now been included in the planning, including the flagpole, to aim for tourism in the future."
According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of A Mu Sung commune, although there was a plan, the province had just experienced a storm so it had to temporarily stop to focus on overcoming the natural disaster.
“In the coming time, the people and the government hope to exploit and develop tourism in Lung Po to help change the lives and economy of the people,” added Mr. Lu A Hoa.
