Mr. Ho Van Mung - Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee has signed Decision 1251 recognizing Cu Lao Gieng commune as an island commune under An Giang province. According to the decision just issued (April 6, 2026), Cu Lao Gieng commune is an island commune under An Giang province.
Communes and wards recognized as island communes must meet 2 criteria. First, 50% or more of the natural area is an island or archipelago according to the provisions of Article 19 of the Vietnam Law of the Sea in 2012 (amended and supplemented in the Law on Organization of Local Governments dated June 16, 2025) or has the entire natural area as a islet isolated from the mainland, with conditions similar to islands.
Second, there are permanent residents or armed forces stationed on islands, archipelagos, and islets to participate in managing and protecting national defense, security, and sea and island sovereignty.
Cu Lao Gieng commune is an island, with a natural area of 68.92 km2, a permanent population of 70,544 people, bordered by the Tien River on all 4 sides. The commune has its entire natural area as an island, isolated from the mainland, with conditions similar to islands. Therefore, Cu Lao Gieng commune is eligible to be recognized as an island commune.

The island commune decision opens up opportunities for policy breakthroughs and socio-economic development for the fertile land, considered the "pearl" in the Tien River. Located isolated in the four sides of the river, Cu Lao Gieng has been exploited for tourism with its own unique advantages. Tourists when coming here can immerse themselves in the vast space of rivers and waters with fresh air, enjoy Mekong Delta specialties, visit architectural works, historical and cultural relics, religions...
Cu Lao Gieng is an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists to visit and experience. The recognition of the island commune will be an important lever to help the locality stabilize and develop people's lives, especially strongly promoting the typical ecotourism potential of the Mekong Delta river region.
