2026 is an important year in the traditional friendly relations between Vietnam and Thailand, an opportunity to look back at the proud achievements between the two countries and further promote cooperative relations, strengthen friendship between the people of the two countries.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee emphasized that after more than a year of implementing the arrangement of administrative units, the city is gradually promoting the effectiveness of potentials and advantages. Continuing to affirm its role as the driving force center of the Mekong Delta region and constantly expanding cooperative relations with international partners, including Thailand.
Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee said that the meeting program is an opportunity to look back at the 50-year journey of development of Vietnam - Thailand diplomatic relations, recognizing practical cooperation results between localities, businesses and people of the two countries.
At the same time, this is also an opportunity for Can Tho City to strengthen connections with Thai partners, expand cooperation in the fields of investment, trade, tourism, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges, thereby contributing to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Ms. Wiraka Moodhitaporn - Consul General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Ho Chi Minh City said that over the past 50 years, the friendly and cooperative relationship between Thailand and Vietnam has been constantly strengthened and developed.
In particular, in 2025, the two countries officially upgraded relations to "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" as the highest level of relations that Vietnam has established with partner countries. This is an important milestone, reflecting the trust, attachment and determination of the two countries in continuing to bring bilateral relations to a new height.
According to Ms. Wiraka Moodhitaporn, Can Tho City is an important partner of Thailand in cooperation between localities. The sisterhood relationship between Can Tho City and Chachoengsao province has become an important mechanism, contributing to promoting cooperation and strengthening exchanges between agencies and people of both sides.
In addition, Ms. Wiraka Moodhitaporn said that tourism is one of the fields with great potential for cooperation between Thailand and Can Tho City, especially the development of floating market tourism. According to her, with the advantage of owning unique floating markets, Can Tho City can strengthen exchanges and learn from Thailand's experience to develop this model into an attractive tourism product, contributing to creating livelihoods for people, while preserving and promoting cultural values and traditional lifestyles.

The Consul General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Ho Chi Minh City hopes that Can Tho City will continue to be a close and reliable partner of Thailand, joining hands to consolidate and develop friendly and cooperative relations between Thailand and Vietnam for the common interests of the people of the two countries, as well as of the entire ASEAN Community.
In the economic field, the cooperative relationship between Can Tho City and Thailand has had many positive developments. In 2025, Thailand's total investment capital in Can Tho City reached about 119.25 million US dollars. In terms of trade, Can Tho's export turnover to Thailand reached 28.8 million US dollars, while import turnover from Thailand reached 10.7 million US dollars.
