From memories of 36 streets to the heritage values of Thang Long - Hanoi

KHÁNH AN |

Within the framework of the 2nd Thang Long - Hanoi Festival in 2026, the program "Net Kinh Ky" is taking place at Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam.

Inspired by images of streets, craft streets and old Thang Long life, the program introduces to the public images and documents about 36 streets of Hanoi, while connecting with traditional craft experience activities, thereby suggesting a story about a Hanoi that is both rich in historical depth, and always moving and continuing in today's life.

In the "Net Kinh Ky" exhibition space, images that seemed to have subsided in memory are introduced again through works and documents about 36 streets and wards of Hanoi, creating a slice of the old Kinh Ky's appearance.

Along with the images are information introducing the history of the streets, the origin of street names and handicrafts that were associated with each street, helping the public have more opportunities to learn about a Hanoi of specialized "goods streets, craft streets".

Through this, the program not only evokes the image of Hanoi streets in the early years of the 20th century but also helps the public identify the Old Quarter as a cultural space formed from history, profession, trade and community life.

A highlight of "Net Kinh Ky" is experiential activities with the participation of artisans from some traditional craft villages.

The public has the opportunity to observe, learn and directly interact with the products and craft techniques of typical craft villages such as Bat Trang pottery, Bo Bat pottery, embroidery, Kim Son sedge weaving, Phong Khe dó paper, Vietnam Silk House...

From a handicraft product, the program opens up a story about raw materials, techniques, the hands of craftsmen and professional knowledge passed down through many generations.

Through direct experience, visitors not only admire products but can also more clearly feel the value of manual labor and the vitality of traditional crafts in contemporary life. Bringing craft experience activities into the heritage space also creates a connection between the memory of the ancient Thang Long craft town and the craft villages that continue to exist and develop today.

Nét Kinh kỳ" aims for a closer approach to heritage to the public: From sightseeing, learning to experience.

Hanoi's streets are introduced not only as a geographical space or a collection of architectural works, but as a cultural heritage deeply associated with urban history, occupations, trade activities and the spiritual life of the Capital's people.
