On the morning of January 25, speaking with Lao Dong reporter, Director of the Department of Cinema Dang Tran Cuong said that after the film was released, an audience sent an email to the Department of Cinema to reflect on the image of the heritage costume of the practice of worshiping the Mother Goddess of the Three Palaces appearing in the film "404 Run Now".
"After receiving feedback from the audience, the Cinema Department requested the distributor to cut this segment to avoid misunderstanding the meaning and value of cultural heritage. The distributor has edited this segment and continued to release it in theaters from January 6," Mr. Dang Tran Cuong shared.
The Director added that recently, the Department of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) also sent a document to the Department of Cinema about this issue. On January 21, the Department of Cinema sent a document to the Department of Cultural Heritage about cutting out the scene in which actress Uyen An wore a costume of the Mother Goddess religion in the film.
In the Thai movie "404 Run Now", Uyen An's scene was not in the official content but was added in the advertisement after the movie.
Uyen An collaborated with the Thai crew to add a film specifically for audiences in Vietnam.
When released in theaters, some people said that Uyen An's appearance did not respect the Mother Goddess worship belief, causing controversy about promoting and using cultural heritage materials.
In response to many conflicting opinions, Uyen An once spoke up and shared: "This is a costume used in a movie and does not mention any specific character. Movies are the director's imaginary world and it has nothing to do with real life. Movie audiences will not think wrongly about culture because it is a movie."
As of January 25, "404 Run Now" has surpassed the 102 billion VND mark, according to data from the independent box office statistics unit The Box Office.
"404 Run Now" revolves around the character Nakrob (Ter Chantavit Dhanasevi), a con man who is in a difficult situation. To change his life, Nakrob plans to "cover up" and sell a dilapidated house at an exorbitant price.
However, things do not go well for Nakrob when the "ghost of the old owner" appears to claim ownership of the land. The work scores points with interesting creepy situations mixed with "half-crying, half-laughing" dialogues.
