Many worries when the exam subjects are not fixed
The Ministry of Education and Training has announced the draft regulations, expected to take the entrance exam for grade 10 public schools with three subjects: Math, Literature and a third subject or a combined test. The third subject will be selected by the Department of Education and Training and the university with high school level from the subjects assessed by scores. This subject will not be fixed but will change every year, announced before March 31, to avoid rote learning and biased learning.
This information makes Ha Diep Chi - a 9C student at Dang Chanh Ky Secondary School (Nghe An) worried and anxious before the important exam. The female student said that she is currently focusing on reviewing two subjects, Math and Literature, and is waiting for more information about the third subject.
“Currently, in my review plan, I focus more on Math and Literature, besides focusing on English, and trying to study all subjects equally. This makes me feel pressured, having difficulty in allocating time, especially in a state of anxiety because the third exam is quite secretive” - Diep Chi worried.
Also a senior, Pham Minh Tu - a 9th grader in Dong Da district (Hanoi) is trying her best to get the best exam results. Currently, the female student is in the process of reviewing for the city-level excellent student exam, which makes her study schedule even more dense.
Sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper, Minh Tu said: "The fact that the third exam subject has not been announced yet has forced me to take additional classes corresponding to each subject such as English; History and Geography; Natural Sciences. Adding additional classes in Math, Literature, and specialized subjects has made my study schedule so dense that I have no time for myself."
The amount of knowledge that Minh Tu had to learn was huge, but it was quite spread out, and he could not go into depth on any subject. This led to his grades only being at a fair level, making Tu even more worried.
The third exam subject should be announced soon.
Many parents and students expressed their agreement with the plan to take three exams for grade 10, but they hope that the Ministry of Education and Training will adjust the time to announce the exam subjects earlier so that students can conveniently review.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu - parent of a 9th grade student in Dong Da district (Hanoi) proposed announcing the third exam subject right from the beginning of the school year so that students and their families can prepare better.
“The 10th grade entrance exam is extremely important, announcing the third subject just a few months before the exam is too hasty. Children will have to take more extra classes to prepare for unexpected situations, leading to increasing pressure, even ineffectiveness in review" - Ms. Thu said.
Sharing about this issue, Ms. Tran Hoai Bac - teacher at Le Loi Secondary School (Nghe An) said that this year's 9th grade students are the first generation to take the 10th grade exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, so there will be many innovations in the exam. For example, the Literature subject no longer has materials in textbooks; new multiple choice test formats have appeared... These things show that the desire of students and parents to soon announce the plan and number of exam subjects is reasonable.
According to Ms. Bac, letting students know about the third exam earlier than expected will help them have more time to review many types of questions outside of the textbook, prepare more thoroughly for the important exam and help them reduce anxiety before the exam.
