More energy projects, Gia Lai proposes investment in transmission grid

THANH TUẤN |

Gia Lai - The province is allocated 110 power source projects. Therefore, the transmission grid and distribution grid system need to be invested synchronously.

110 power source projects allocated

According to statistics from the Gia Lai Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, implementing the Adjustment of Power Plan VIII for the period 2026 - 2030, Gia Lai is allocated to develop 110 power source projects with a total capacity of 5,501 MW.

Currently, the province has been and is implementing 91 projects with a total capacity of about 4,924 MW, reaching nearly 90% of the total capacity allocated according to the plan.

It is expected that in the period 2026 - 2030, there will be 53 power source projects connected to the 220kV or more grid with a total capacity of 4,334 MW and 68 projects connected to the 110kV grid with a total capacity of 1,185 MW in the province.

However, the current inadequacy is that power source projects are developing at a rapid pace, while the transmission grid and distribution grid systems have not been synchronously invested, increasing the risk of affecting the ability to release power capacity.

If the capacity release is limited, many problems will arise such as rotational power production cuts, reducing revenue and affecting the interests of investors.

Invest in the power grid early, avoiding waste of resources

Therefore, Gia Lai province proposed that Vietnam Electricity Group prioritize resources to invest in 500kV, 220kV and 110kV power grid projects according to the Adjustment of Power Plan VIII.

At the same time, accelerate the progress of increasing the capacity of transformer substations, renovating overloaded power lines, especially in the Krong Pa area and areas with many renewable energy projects.

The electricity sector needs to study technical solutions to improve capacity dissipation capacity, and at the same time coordinate with localities to review and update planning in accordance with the province's development speed.

Gia Lai is striving to achieve the double-digit economic growth target as directed by the Government, aiming to become a processing industry, logistics and energy center of the region.

Therefore, the provincial government identifies electricity sources for production and business as essential technical infrastructure, playing a decisive role in the competitiveness, investment attraction and sustainable development of the locality.

In July 2026, Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee issued an official letter requesting the Prime Minister to consider and direct ministries and sectors to request Vietnam Electricity Group, National Power Transmission Corporation and Central Power Corporation to urgently accelerate the investment progress of power grid projects according to the approved plan, promptly meeting the operating progress of power source projects.

If power sources are put into operation while the transmission grid does not meet the needs, it will lead to the risk of local overload, limiting the ability to unload capacity, causing waste of social investment resources and affecting electricity supply security.
