On October 16, information from the People's Committee of Nghe An province said that it had just issued Decision 2618 stating that Thanh Thuy border gate (in Thanh Chuong district bordering Laos) is allowed to conduct cross-border trading and exchange of goods in Nghe An province.
Previously, in Decision 1201 dated October 14, 2023, the Prime Minister approved the Planning of border gates on the Vietnam - Laos land border for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, identifying the Thanh Thuy - Nam On border gate pair as the main pair of border gates, located on the Hanoi - Vientiane highway, to be upgraded to an international border gate for the period 2023-2030.
However, Laos has not yet decided to upgrade Nam On border gate to a main border gate. Therefore, to facilitate people and businesses, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee and Bolykhamxay Provincial Government (Laos) have completed procedures and announced the Thanh Thuy - Nam On border gate pair as a pair of secondary border gates allowed to conduct cross-border trading and exchange of goods.
After reaching an agreement with the Bolykhamxay provincial government, the People's Committee of Nghe An province issued a decision allowing road vehicles of Nghe An and Bolykhamxay provinces to transport people and goods through the Thanh Thuy - Nam On secondary border gate.
Currently, the traffic system to Thanh Thuy border gate has been invested synchronously, connecting with Ho Chi Minh road, North-South expressway, and National Highway 1A.
Facilities, equipment, and working houses of the Border Guard force have been invested in and built solidly; the working house of the Customs force is under construction, expected to be put into use by the end of 2024; warehouses for goods inspection and necessary equipment basically meet the requirements of exchanging and trading goods across the border and are gradually upgraded to meet the criteria of the main border gate according to the direction of the Prime Minister.
The favorable development of traffic at Thanh Thuy border gate will open up many prospects in promoting economic development not only for Vietnam and Laos but also for countries in the region.
