World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices simultaneously decreased sharply. At the end of yesterday's trading session (May 21), WTI and Brent oil prices decreased by 1.9% and 2.3% respectively.
By this morning's session, both oil commodities continued to decline. At 7:55 am (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 97.85 USD/barrel, down 0.15 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.15%. WTI oil price closed the previous trading session at 98 USD/barrel and opened this morning's session at 97.66 USD/barrel.
Brent oil price was at 104.67 USD/barrel, down 0.24 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.23%. Brent oil price closed the previous trading session at 104.93 USD/barrel and opened this morning's session at 104.94 USD/barrel.
According to analysts, the oil market has just experienced a trading session with many notable fluctuations. Oil prices rose sharply after information that the Iranian Supreme Leader directed the retention of enriched uranium in the country's territory, making peace talks more complicated as the dissolution of Tehran's nuclear program remains a central requirement from the US.
Iran is also said to be coordinating with Oman to build a long-term toll mechanism for maritime activities through the Strait of Hormuz, a move seen as aimed at formalizing Tehran's control of this strategic energy transport route.
However, the market quickly reversed downwards after President Donald Trump rejected the above proposal, affirming that the Strait of Hormuz needs to be maintained as a free shipping route and not subject to tolls. This development helps strengthen expectations that the parties may eventually reach an agreement to de-escalate tensions.
The US side also said that "some encouraging signs" have emerged related to the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran. According to the plan, mediators from Pakistan will come to Tehran as Iranian officials are considering the latest proposal from Washington.
