Van Don International Airport is the first private airport in Vietnam, which has been operating for 7 years.
To meet development requirements in the new period, the Ministry of Construction has issued a decision adjusting the airport planning - Van Don International Airport Plan for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050.
Accordingly, in the period 2021-2030, continue to maintain the existing passenger terminal T1 to meet a capacity of about 2.5 million passengers/year. Vision to 2050, new planning of passenger terminal T2 to the South, capacity of about 5.0 million passengers/year; passenger terminal T3 to the North of the Air Traffic Control Tower about 12.5 million passengers/year.
For the freight terminal, in the period 2021-2030, planning in the Northeast reaches a capacity of about 5,000 tons of goods/year. Vision to 2050, expanding the freight terminal to reach a capacity of 200,000 tons of goods/year.
In the new plan, in addition to building a second runway, expanding the apron to about 34 locations, building passenger terminals T2, T3 and cargo terminals with a capacity of 200,000 tons/year, the airport is also synchronously planned with an aviation logistics system, aircraft repair, maintenance, overhaul complex... and modern technical infrastructure.

This adjustment does not stem from immediate exploitation needs, but reflects the country's long-term development vision.
According to the Overall Plan for Airport System Development of Vietnam, Van Don International Airport is identified as one of the important international airports of the North.
If previously, Van Don International Airport was identified as a gateway for passenger transport serving tourism development, now it is planned according to a multi-functional aviation center model, integrating passenger, cargo, logistics and aviation industry transportation.
Recently, Sun Group - the investor of Van Don International Airport - together with HAECO, Japan Airlines and Toyota Tsusho have just signed a cooperation agreement to research and invest in a complex for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) with a scale of about 360 million USD at Van Don International Airport.
The project is expected to become one of the largest MRO centers in Vietnam, capable of simultaneously receiving many wide-body and narrow-body aircraft according to international standards. This is not only a single investment project, but also an important piece, opening up a direction for the development of a high value-added aviation industry, gradually improving the technical autonomy capacity of Vietnamese aviation and participating more deeply in the global aviation value chain.
