These days, when the demand for planting crops to serve the Tet market increases, farmers specializing in growing seedlings in Can Tho are busier than ever. In addition to regular products, farmers also produce many types of seedlings such as marigolds, chrysanthemums, mustard greens, chili peppers, etc. to supply for the last months of the year.
With a 4,000 m2 nursery, Mr. Tran Van Tang (Thot Not District, Can Tho City) currently sells an average of 2,000 seedlings of all kinds every day. Of which, marigolds are considered by Mr. Tang to be the most popular, accounting for about 40% of the number of seedlings sold.
“It’s only the beginning of the season, but customer purchasing power has increased sharply, leading to a shortage of some types of seedlings. Many customers in Binh Duong, Da Nang, Tay Ninh, etc. who could not buy seedlings last year have taken advantage of the opportunity to go earlier this year,” said Mr. Tang.
Forecasting that customer demand will increase sharply in the coming days, coupled with favorable weather, Mr. Tang is currently busy producing, increasing the number of seedlings by 30-50% for each type. Accordingly, marigolds and mustard greens are the items that have increased the most due to people's demand for Tet.
“With this situation, during this year's Tet season, my farm will produce 40,000 - 50,000 seedlings/type, of which marigolds alone can produce more than 70,000 plants,” Mr. Tang estimated.
Excited about the strong increase in purchasing power, Ms. Truong Thi Kieu (Thot Not District, Can Tho City) shared that at the end of the year, the nursery must increase the quantity of marigolds, mustard greens and chili peppers to supply the market. These are the most sought-after varieties of plants during Tet.
“In 2023, the economy is difficult but purchasing power has increased dramatically, the nursery does not have enough goods so many customers have to go home empty-handed. Learning from experience, this time, the production of all seedlings has increased by 30% to keep up with supply,” Ms. Kieu shared.
According to Ms. Kieu's estimate, currently, consumption has begun to increase rapidly, with the number of seedlings sold each day ranging from 400 to 600 per type. However, compared to purchasing power, the price of seedlings remains stable.
