USD price drops sharply gold prices increase sharply today
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the fluctuations of the greenback against 6 major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) is currently at 93.404.
USD prices fell after experts from Wall Street warned that former vice president Joe Biden's victory could harm the greenback. The latest polls show President Donald Trump lagging behind Joe Biden in key states.
The US dollar index fell 0.64% to 93.5.
The New York Times poll shows that former Vice President Biden has a leading position for Trump in key surrounding states including Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
If Mr. Biden wins over those three states (especially Florida or North Carolina), Donald Trumps chances will be significantly reduced, he said in a note. In other words, while there is a high risk of a delay in the results, it is likely that Joe Biden will win early if the results show him leading, said ING analyst.
If Mr. Biden wins, this could be bad news for the dollar because the former vice president is unlikely to continue Trump's trade war against China and the EU, boost US imports from abroad and therefore add to the global dollar supply.
However, Goldman Sachs suggests that the dollar will fall regardless of who wins when US real interest rates fall and the strong global economic recovery from the COVID-19 recession represents a "standard formula for a weak dollar".
"We expect the USD to fall 15% as a trade proportion from this year's highest level to the end of 2023. Even the possibility of the exchange rate falling further is entirely possible."
