According to Mr. Tran Minh Tien, lecturer of Automotive Technology, Dung Quat College of Technology (Quang Ngai), an easy-to-recognize sign when a gasoline car is mistakenly filled with diesel is a weak engine, vibration and changes in engine noise.
The car may still start after the wrong fuel is poured but the engine is not operating stably. This condition is usually more pronounced when the driver presses the accelerator or the car starts to bear the load.
Another sign is that white smoke appears a lot in the exhaust pipes. When you press the accelerator, the amount of smoke can increase sharply, even forming a thick smoke screen behind the car.
The level of expression depends on the amount of diesel oil mistakenly poured. If the amount of diesel accounts for a low percentage, the car may still be able to operate for a period of time. However, if the amount of fuel mistakenly poured is large, the engine may only start for a few seconds and then "stall" and cannot be restarted.
When detecting the wrong discharge of diesel oil into a gasoline car, the car owner needs to stop the engine immediately and absolutely do not try to start the engine or continue pedaling. Continuing operation may cause inappropriate fuel to go deeper into the fuel system, thereby increasing the risk of damage.
After that, the car owner should take the vehicle to the nearest garage or dealership for inspection and handling. The technician will discharge the wrong fuel, clean the fuel system and add the correct type of fuel according to the technical procedure.
In case the car has stalled after pouring the wrong fuel, the car owner should not try to restart many times. According to Mr. Tien, the appropriate plan is to call for rescue and take the car to a repair facility for handling.
To limit incidents, car owners should proactively check the type of fuel before refueling. This is especially necessary for car models with both gasoline and diesel engine versions, because the external appearance of the versions may be similar.
Confirming the correct type of fuel before pumping is a simple operation but helps avoid unnecessary risks to the engine and fuel system of the car.
