Dr. Rinky Kapoor - dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics (India) - said what to do and not do when applying ointment to hair.
Things to do when applying ointment to your hair
- Always oil before shampooing
Hair conditioner is a great moisturizer and if you want to keep your hair hydrated and not shabby, you need to apply it before rinsing your hair. In addition, hair conditioner also helps protect the scalp from harmful chemicals.
- Only use a small amount of hair conditioner
The more you apply hair oil, the more shampoo you need to rinse. This can cause hair to dry out and can lead to scalp eczema.
- Always warm the oil before applying
Warm oil permeates hair better. Basically, the oil molecules are very large and do not easily penetrate the scalp. Warming up the conditioner helps break down these molecules, helping the scalp penetrate the nutrients better.
Things to avoid when applying ointment to your hair
- Do not leave oil on your hair overnight
Dust will build up on your hair if you leave it overnight with oil, which can clog hair follicles and lead to scalp infections. Just leave the conditioner on your hair for 30 minutes.
- Do not tie hair after applying ointment
When massaging the scalp, the curling layer of the hair is exposed and there is a high risk of hair loss if the hair is tied too tightly.
Avoid applying oil to hair if the scalp is oily
Applying essential oil to oily scalp is at high risk of scalp infections. Also, if you have acne on your forehead, avoid applying oil to the top of your head.
