What are the similarities and differences between My Anh's version in everyday life and My Anh in music?
- Actually, I have never thought about this. Perhaps because personal life and music are too close together. For me, enjoying myself, listening to music in the morning is also part of work, more or less.
The similarity I think is that I am a person with a lot of emotions. I am sensitive. I am a person who feels emotions very intensely. Whether in everyday life or in music, I also try to bring that material into my music.
Regarding the difference, I myself don't know how to find it. I am in everyday life and music are almost one.
All the things that I show on stage and in my songs are very real emotions that I have experienced. Perhaps the difference is that in real life I am more calm on stage.
People say that normally in real life I am more calm, but on stage I forget my shyness, so I am comfortable and enjoy myself to the fullest.
My Anh's music is very modern, has its own quality and different colors. However, in terms of virality, it can be seen that your music has not yet reached the majority of audiences as many young artists are aiming for. What do you think about this?
- I think the viral element is something that every artist desires and that is also an important part of an artist's journey.
However, for me, maybe because I love music and art too much, I don't consider viral ability to be everything. Music also has many, many other values and even the artists who inspire me are not names that are known to many people.
I myself am still in the process of learning, cultivating and exploring different genres of music, different ways of writing. I try not to let myself just because of viral content leave behind other equally important elements. Those things can be my own personality, and the opportunity to connect with the audience.
Of course, viral is something that everyone wants and so do I myself. It's simply that I keep myself from being impatient and persistent, keeping my own values.
In My Anh's music, the R&B quality with rhythm and melody has a very unique personality. My Anh's singing style is not like her mother - singer My Linh, and the composing style is also not like her father - musician Anh Quan. Do you have to try to be different?
- I think it is very necessary for each artist to have their own personality and color, but it should not be something that I try to create. I have never tried to be different from my parents' music, I still listen to my parents' music.
If my music is slightly influenced by my parents, I think that is also very natural, because I grew up with it. I have observed my parents' music, I have had the opportunity to accompany my parents' career. From a young age, I went to see my parents perform and I unconsciously thought that my parents' music also more or less affected me.
I see that as a very beautiful thing if viewed from a different perspective. I am not too concerned about having to be different, having to separate from the shadow of my parents, but I feel light when thinking in the direction that I am a combination of all experiences, all the people I have had the opportunity to meet, all the emotions I have felt, and that is what makes My Anh today.
Therefore, I believe my music will still have my own quality and colors from many other people. I feel lucky to do this job.
My Anh appeared on her parents' artistic path from a young age. What are your feelings when you went from being someone who "followed" their parents to becoming an independent artist, walking on your own two feet?
- I think those experiences also have 2 quite different emotions.
In the past, I was also like other young people, going to school, living normally. My parents never guided me to follow the path of music, did not say "you must follow this profession, you must go this path, you must make music like that". My love for music came to me very naturally.
One day, I still remember that moment, it was the first time I performed a self-composed song on stage. It was the first time I performed my song, and at that time I thought: "Oh, I like this feeling, I understand and I crave it, I like to sing songs that I have composed myself in my room. I have felt that feeling and having the opportunity to connect with the audience is wonderful".
So from then on, I decided to pursue a musical journey.
Sometimes I will meet my parents at work, which is a very good thing. I live separately, so occasionally meeting my parents, but as colleagues, is a very interesting experience.
Do your parents participate in giving advice and direction in your music?
- Depending on each song, depending on each project, I will ask for my parents' opinions. But my parents will never proactively comment, but only when I want to consult the opinion of an listener, my parents will support me.
When I make music and listen to it continuously, listening over and over again, I always need more objective opinions. Only when I confess, do my parents share their views, never impose or guide me to become someone. I really appreciate that.
When I participated in the reality show "The Heroes", in one round of competition, I composed the song "Yen" (Peace). That is the song that I asked my father for his opinion a lot.
I exchanged with my father and was listened to and supported by my father. Besides, I still have a lot of space to experiment.
With your parents' music, is there any of their songs that impressed My Anh?
- I love all my parents' songs, not because I am their daughter. As an audience member, I will still listen to my parents' music a lot, so choosing a specific song is a bit difficult for me.
I witnessed the process of songs being born. If I had to choose, I would choose "Short Hair".
When I was little, I listened to my mother perform a lot and it seems that now I can truly connect with the message of the song. The song talks about being yourself and not being afraid of being different.
That song also inspired me to be myself. That is the way for me to shine, be happy and enjoy everything.
How does My Anh position herself in today's young music life?
- Actually, my answer is very simple, that I feel lucky to contribute a small part in many music products, many different artists.
I am very happy because I am a part of different genres of music and in general a treasure of art. I think I and young artists should continue to make many art products, taking care of each product, the Vietnamese music market will develop more and more.
I am very happy to be on that journey.
