HUE - People along the coast of Thuan An have not yet fully overcome the damage caused by landslides and erosion last year, but now they are rushing to evacuate property when rain, wind, and high waves rush in.

Damage not yet overcome, rain and wind come again

In 2025, the coast of Thuan An ward, Hue city was continuously eroded by large waves, the situation of erosion penetrated deep into the mainland, approaching restaurants and coastal works. Sand and large rocks were swept away by waves and thrown into the business area, causing many households to close down for a long time, causing damage to property and business operations.

The family of Mr. Tran Dai Chien (38 years old), owner of Thang restaurant, is one of the affected households. For about half of 2025, the family's business was unstable, and most of the time had to close due to natural disasters.

At the beginning of 2026, the restaurant reopened for a short time, then the area implemented the coastal erosion treatment project. The number of customers decreased sharply, and business continued to face difficulties.

“For a long time, sales were sluggish, all closed, but now rain and wind have reappeared. Today's sea waves are too big, hitting hard, so we are considering evacuating tables, chairs, and belongings to avoid being affected,” Mr. Chien said.

Recorded by Lao Dong Newspaper reporters from the afternoon of September 12, heavy rain and strong winds caused rough seas, waves continuously pouring into the shore. Faced with unfavorable weather developments due to the impact of the tropical depression, many coastal eateries proactively packed tables and chairs, closed doors to protect property.

At Long Linh restaurant, the owner and relatives hurriedly moved tables and chairs inside, using shields and items to reinforce and shield. The corrugated iron roof that was bent and hit by the wind, making a loud noise, was also found to be fixed.

The beach is deserted of tourists. Instead, people are urgently collecting property, preparing to cope with rain, wind and big waves.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Le Dinh Phong - Chairman of Thuan An Ward People's Committee said that the locality has assigned working groups to propagate and mobilize people to proactively prevent and control storms; and at the same time develop response plans and be ready to relocate people when necessary.

Sea waves destroy a hundred-billion VND embankment under construction

Not far from the restaurant area, the coastal erosion treatment project of Thuan An ward is also directly affected by large waves.

At the construction site, many machines had to temporarily stop operating due to bad weather. Outside the construction area, steel piles are continuously closed to block waves. However, each large wave crashing in creates white water columns, seawater overflowing the top of the piles into the construction site.

The coastal erosion treatment project of Thuan An ward was started on June 20, 2026, with a total investment of 260 billion VND. The project includes a 670m long embankment line, a wave-reducing dyke line and geological pipe welding mines, expected to be completed on December 20, 2027.

This is an area heavily affected by landslides and erosion. In 2024 and 2025, storms caused about 1km of coastline to be seriously damaged, affecting infrastructure and people's lives.

According to the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hue City, there are currently about 280m of embankment that have not been completed. When the weather is favorable, the contractor will continue construction, striving to complete the remaining embankment in November, ensuring the set schedule.

According to forecasts, from the afternoon of September 12 to the end of September 15, Hue City will have heavy rain, very heavy rain and thunderstorms, with a common total rainfall of 150-300mm, in some places over 400mm. The coastal area will gradually have winds increasing to level 4-5, gusting to level 6-7.

According to the City Hydrometeorological Station, at sea, from September 12-14, winds will gradually strengthen to level 6, gusts of level 7-8, waves 1.5-3m high, rough seas. Ships operating in the sea and offshore of Hue City are at risk of being affected by thunderstorms, strong winds, large waves and rising water.

On September 12, the Hue City Civil Defense Command requested departments, agencies, branches and localities to proactively respond to tropical depressions, heavy rain, strong winds, water surges and natural disaster risks; review and prepare disaster prevention plans according to the "four on-the-spot" motto, not subjective or passive.
