From the national Sprint Triathlon champion, Lam Quang Nhat is showing a strong transformation when trying his hand at IRONMAN 70. 3. For the male athlete, this is not simply a race for achievements but also a journey to test his limits.
IRONMAN 70. 3 includes three consecutive events: 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running.
Previously, at the 10th IRONMAN 70. 3 Vietnam tournament that kicked off in Da Nang, Lam Quang Nhat excellently completed all three events and officially became the first Vietnamese male athlete to achieve a time of 4 hours 13 minutes 44 seconds, winning second place overall in all events of 1,900 m swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running at IRONMAN 70. 3 Vietnam this year.
Sharing about the decision to increase the competition distance, Lam Quang Nhat said that he had considered a lot because Sprint Triathlon and IRONMAN 70. 3 require two completely different platforms.
I believe I can still maintain my national gold medal position in the Sprint event and continue to break the record held by myself. However, increasing the weight to the middle distance when the foundation is not enough is also a big risk. If I choose the wrong time or arrange the match schedule inappropriately, I may lose my form in both events," he said.
According to the male athlete, the most difficult point is not just one event alone but the ability to maintain stable fitness for a long time. To adapt, he has to significantly change his training plan, diet as well as how to recover his body.
Originating as a former swimmer, Lam Quang Nhat took advantage of swimming to create an advantage in the early stages. However, what satisfied him the most was the running section - an event that was once considered a weakness in previous seasons.
I am happy that this time I maintained a more stable pace when running. This is something I have focused on improving for a long time," he shared.
Maintaining performance throughout the three events of swimming, cycling and running under competitive pressure from many international athletes is considered a major step forward for Vietnamese triathletes. Lam Quang Nhat's new achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also contributes to affirming the progress of Vietnamese Triathlon in the international arena.
I have been and am accumulating more experience as well as a physical foundation with Triathlon. I look forward to a good result for myself in Thailand at the end of this year," he expressed.
Born in 1997 in Ho Chi Minh City, Lam Quang Nhat was once considered the "swimming prodigy" of Vietnamese sports when he won 2 SEA Games gold medals in 2013 and 2015. After switching to Triathlon, he continued to affirm his name with 3 consecutive national championships from 2023 to 2025, and also holds the national record in this event.
