Female artist from Hue paints lacquer paintings about the Central Highlands

The lacquer painting exhibition "Listening to the story of our village" by artist Ho Thi Xuan Thu started from September 6 and will last until September 15 at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts.

Ho Thi Xuan Thu was born in 1960 in Hue. Shortly after graduating from Hue College of Fine Arts, in the winter of 1985, she went to Pleiku to take up a task.

That's why, when coming to this exhibition, she named it "Listening to the story of my village", because this is the story of my own village, not the story of a Central Highlands village in the eyes of a Hue girl, there is a difference.
So, she named this exhibition "Listening to stories of our village".
After nearly 10 years of living in the new land, with countless trips to the village and countless sketches and notes, Ho Thi Xuan Thu has truly matured enough to write about the Central Highlands as the Central Highlanders think. She follows the spirit of their life, not her own techniques or will.

However, after about 5 years of painting oil on this subject, she still felt unsatisfied, so she temporarily put her creative work aside and temporarily left her small family to return to Hue to study lacquer. Ho Thi Xuan Thu found that lacquer was exactly the material and medium she was looking for.
Perhaps the lacquer craft has favored her, so it has opened a satisfactory path to a new horizon. There, she can tell the story of her village more leisurely, more vividly, more deeply.

It is difficult to describe in words, but for her, the Central Highlands people have freedom, simplicity, and strength in themselves. This is also the true spiritual value of this land. After many years of attachment, this has become Ho Thi Xuan Thu's painting style. So she uses it naturally, sweetly, without having to pay too much attention or try too hard. Therefore, if her paintings have simplicity, freedom, and strength, then that is also the true value of the Central Highlands life that she feels, because she is a part of the Central Highlands soul.

The colors in her paintings come naturally when she paints, and she paints them as she feels them. The colors of lacquer paintings are red, yellow, and then… from tradition, but perhaps when painting, she touches her own heart, expressing what she feels is enough. There is no need to be concerned with the right or wrong of the colors or composition, because the warmth in the paintings is also the warmth of family affection, of the story of her village. As long as she paints something that is pleasing to the eye and touches the heart, that is enough.
