Doctors from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology 3, Phu Tho Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital have just successfully performed an emergency evening surgery, saving the lives of 3 mothers and children in a state of umbilical cord failure - an extremely dangerous obstetric complication. Notably, the surgery was performed just a few minutes after the patient was admitted to the hospital, without any legal procedures.
At around 2:00 a.m. on August 24, 2025, the pregnant woman P.T.N.A (22 years old, residing in Cam Khe, Phu Tho) was 36 weeks pregnant, admitted to the hospital with a ruptured amniotic fluid, a 3cm cervical opening, umbilical cord growing between the legs, and a disjointed fetal heart, making it difficult to detect the signal on the monitor. Faced with the high risk of death of the fetus, the duty team decided to ignore the administrative procedures and take the mother directly to the operating room.
Just 5 minutes after receiving the patient, doctors of the Obstetrics Department 3 coordinated with the Anesthesia - Resuscitation Department and the Neonatal Department to urgently perform the surgery. The surgery took place in about 10 minutes, the two girls weighed 2.6 kg and were born safely, and were immediately transferred to the Neonatal Department for monitoring. The mother was also stable after surgery.
Dr. Ha Manh Hung - Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology 3 - said: "According to regulations, mothers who are prescribed cesarean section must be hospitalized at least 4 hours in advance to have a full test. However, in this special situation, if the procedure is completed, the fetus's chance of survival is almost zero. Therefore, we were forced to choose the "opposite to the process but true to our conscience" option to save people.
After surgery, when exploiting the medical history, it was discovered that the mother had many dangerous underlying diseases such as severe preeclampsia, Basedow, type II diabetes was injecting insulin but was not closely monitored. This makes the team breathe a sigh of relief after the surgery successfully, because if complications occur, the risk of facing legal liability is very high.
After 5 days of post-operative surgery, the mother recovered well and was discharged from the hospital, and the two children continued to be cared for in the Neonatal Department.
Doctors recommend that pregnant women need to have regular check-ups according to their instructions to promptly detect and treat risks. When there are signs of rupture or abnormality during pregnancy, it is necessary to immediately go to the nearest medical facility to avoid unfortunate situations.
