Vietnam is becoming a hotspot for digital infrastructure development

Competition in the AI era is not only taking place in the application layer or AI model, but is increasingly determined by the digital infrastructure capabilities behind it.

On June 16, Viettel IDC organized the Data Center & Cloud Infrastructure Summit (DCCI Summit) 2026 with the theme "Sustainable Infrastructure for Global Digital Growth".

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tran Van Bang - Deputy General Director of Viettel IDC, said that in the AI era, advantages come not only from models or algorithms, but also from the infrastructure capabilities behind them. Data Center, Cloud, security and operation are factors that determine the ability to deploy AI on a practical scale. If there is a lack of a strong, safe and flexible infrastructure platform, businesses will find it very difficult to turn AI into business efficiency. This is also the strategic direction that Viettel IDC is pursuing.

Competition in the AI era is no longer only taking place in the application layer or AI model, but is increasingly decided by the digital infrastructure capabilities behind it," Mr. Bang assessed.

According to Gartner's report, global AI spending is expected to reach 2.52 trillion USD in 2026, up 44% compared to the previous year and possibly reach 3.3 trillion USD in 2027. Notably, in the investment structure in 2025, AI infrastructure accounts for 55% of total investment, the highest in all segments.

There are currently about 11,000 data centers in the world, with a total power consumption of over 120GW. AI Data Centers, although newly developed in the last few years, account for less than 1% in number, but have consumed up to 25% of the total power of the entire global Data Center system.

According to the IEA, the total electricity consumption of global Data Centers may triple in the next 10 years, mainly due to tasks related to AI. This puts the data center market in front of an important change: The big problem is not just expanding computing power, but ensuring power supply, optimizing performance and operating more sustainably.

According to Johnson Controls, Vietnam is becoming a hot spot for digital infrastructure development, leading to a wave of announcements adding about 1.4 GW of capacity to data centers. This boom is strongly driven by domestic telecommunications network operators and the landing of international investors, with infrastructure focusing on the Southern region.

In that growth picture, Ho Chi Minh City emerges as a prominent growth pole: The city currently has more than 15 operating data centers of Viettel, VNPT, FPT and CMC, plus 82% 5G coverage - creating top-tier connectivity infrastructure, accelerating cloud application in businesses.

This shift reflects a clear change in the market. Ho Chi Minh City is home to many businesses in the fields of finance, banking, fintech, technology, retail, manufacturing, logistics and digital services. These are industries with high demand for data, system readiness, real-time processing and rapid expansion capabilities.

This is especially meaningful for Ho Chi Minh City, where the speed of technology application of businesses is fast, but the requirements for investment efficiency, data security and system continuity are also increasing. In the AI acceleration phase, the market not only needs more infrastructure, but also infrastructure capable of operating AI safely, controlled and measurable value.

If Data Center is a physical foundation, Cloud is an infrastructure layer that helps businesses expand flexibly in the AI era. Cloud today is not only an IT infrastructure but has become a platform to help businesses deploy AI flexibly, meeting data, security and compliance requirements.

In the context of data, Cloud, Data Center and information security increasingly closely linked to operations, the infrastructure problem is no longer simply a technology issue. It is becoming a decisive factor in the innovation, growth and competitiveness of businesses in the AI era.

Because in the AI era, businesses that master digital infrastructure will master the speed of innovation, growth capacity and competitive advantage of themselves.
