Untreated urban wastewater is the main cause
Under the pressure of socio-economic development and rapid urbanization, many rivers in our country are polluted at different levels, especially seriously in areas with high population density and many productive activities. Rivers that once brought landscape and air conditioning have now become huge drainage channels, directly affecting the landscape and people's lives.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Hieu - Deputy Director of the Department of Water Resources Management - pointed out the core factors leading to the current serious pollution. According to Mr. Hieu, there are many causes but the biggest problem comes from the wastewater treatment system.
"The main reason is that urban wastewater has not been collected and thoroughly treated, leading to the situation of direct discharge into inner-city rivers, causing water pollution. This is the most important issue, Mr. Hieu emphasized.
This reality is clearly shown through the image of large and small sewers that dump untreated domestic and production wastewater day and night into rivers such as To Lich, Kim Nguu, Lu, Set (Hanoi). The black, foaming water and strong odors are proof that rivers are "struggling" to suffer a huge amount of waste, far beyond nature's self-cleaning ability, turning them into truly "dead rivers".

General responsibility
To solve a complex and long-term problem such as river pollution, it is impossible to rely on just one agency or a single solution. This must be a common effort, requiring the synchronous participation of the entire political system and the whole society.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoa - Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment - affirmed the role and collective responsibility in this work. Conserving and protecting the environment is a shared responsibility of the entire political system, Mr. Hoa shared. This means that, from state management agencies, businesses to each citizen, everyone must recognize their role and act together.
On the side of Hanoi city, Mr. Hoa said that the locality has been implementing many key projects to solve the problem of pollution at its root.
He said: "Hanoi City is implementing a number of key projects such as Lien Mac culvert, Yen So wastewater treatment plant and Yen Xa wastewater treatment plant".
These are strategic infrastructure projects, when completed, they will contribute significantly to collecting and treating a large amount of domestic wastewater in the city before discharging into the environment. Investing in large-scale wastewater treatment plants is the most fundamental solution, directly solving the causes that Mr. Nguyen Hong Hieu pointed out.
Reviving a river is not only about cleaning a water source, but also restoring the ecosystem, improving the health and quality of life for people. That is also a way to preserve urban memories, preserving the cultural flow for future generations.
