The People's Court of Nam Sach District (Hai Duong Province) has just opened a public trial for defendant Ha Van Duc (born in 1997, residing in Na Xa village, Quang Huy commune, Phu Yen district, Son La province) for the crime of Transporting prohibited goods, stipulated in Point b, Clause 1, Article 191 of the Penal Code.
According to the indictment, due to unemployment and need for money to spend during the Lunar New Year 2025, Ha Van Duc agreed to transport type 555 cigarettes of unknown origin to a subject named Quan (specific surname and address unknown) for 500,000 VND/box.
On the afternoon of January 13, 2025, Duc went to Quan Goi area in Hung Yen province to receive 6 boxes of 555 cigarettes from Thuan and deliver them to Quan. At about 14:30 on the same day, when Duc transported the goods, he rented 4 cardboard boxes containing 50 cigarette packs (each containing 10 packs, 10 cigarettes/1 bag) and 2 cardboard boxes containing 49 cigarette packs (each containing 10 packs, 10 cigarettes/1 bag).
A total of 2,980 packs of cigarettes smuggled to the Minh Hiep gas station area in Van Tai Tay village (Hong Phong commune, Nam Sach district, Hai Duong province) were discovered and caught red-handed by a working group of the Department of Investigation Police on Corruption, Economic Crimes, Smuggling, and Environment (Hai Duong Provincial Police) in coordination with Hong Phong Commune Police (Nam Sach district) and evidence seized.
Based on the results of the debate at the trial, the Trial Council sentenced defendant Ha Van Duc to 21 months in prison.
