Ho Chi Minh City explains the speed limit of 50km/h for motorbikes on National Highway 22

MINH QUÂN |

On March 26, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that limiting the maximum speed of 50km/h for motorbikes on National Highway 22 is to ensure traffic safety.

According to the Department of Construction, the section of National Highway 22 from the border of Tay Ninh province to An Ha bridge (old Cu Chi district) is currently renamed Phan Van Khai street; the section from An Ha bridge to An Suong intersection (Hoc Mon area - old District 12) is named Le Quang Dao street.

This is a vital traffic axis connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Tay Ninh province, and also a Northwest gateway with very high traffic density.

Reality recorded that congestion often occurs throughout the route, especially at intersections with traffic lights such as Le Loi, Ly Thuong Kiet, Ba Trieu, Le Thi Ha, Nguyen Anh Thu.

One of the main reasons pointed out by functional agencies is that infrastructure has not met the exploitation flow.

The mixed lanes on both sides of the route are only about 4-5m wide, while the residential area is dense, many sections lack sidewalks or sidewalks are very narrow. In addition, the technical infrastructure system arranged close to the road edge also reduces traffic space.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, traffic accident statistics on the route in the last 3 years show that the proportion related to motorbikes and three-wheeled vehicles is overwhelming.

2023: 14 cases, 13 deaths, 3 injuries; of which 2- and 3-wheeled vehicles accounted for 85.7% of cases and 92.3% of deaths.

Year 2024: 15 cases, 14 deaths; 100% of deaths related to 2- 3-wheeled vehicles.

Year 2025: 18 cases, 12 deaths, 3 injuries; 2- and 3-wheeled vehicles accounted for 55.6% of cases and 66.7% of deaths.

From the above reality, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction believes that the regulation of a maximum speed of 50km/h for mixed lanes is a necessary solution to reduce traffic conflicts, limit accidents, especially for vulnerable vehicles such as motorbikes.

In the coming time, the city will continue to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Police to review and adjust the traffic light cycle at intersections with high vehicle density.

In the long term, Ho Chi Minh City will implement the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 22 (section from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3) with a length of about 8 km.

The road surface will be expanded from the current 36 - 40 m to 60 m, arranging 10 lanes. On the route, 7 overpasses will be built at intersections to reduce conflicts and ensure continuous traffic.

4 middle lanes are for fast-moving vehicles with a maximum speed of 80 km/h, 6 lanes on both sides are operated at a speed of 60 km/h.

The project has a total investment of about 10,500 billion VND, implemented in the form of BOT (build - operate - transfer). Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of 2026 and be completed in 2028.
