Towards the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification, the government and people of Long Thanh My ward, Thu Duc city have made efforts to "eras the book" of spontaneous landfills, turning them into "green lungs" of the community.
Mr. Tran Van Luan, Head of Quarter 2, Long Thanh My Ward, Thu Duc City, said that since 2001, many areas in the ward have had spontaneous landfills illegally dumped by some people.
With many vacant land areas and no management forces, there are more and more landfills. This issue has been raised by people and reflected in many meetings of the neighborhood.

Faced with the above situation, the Neighborhood Party Cell has issued a Resolution to convert landfills into green parks with a total area of about more than 1,000m2.
This idea quickly received the response and support of many people in the neighborhood, said Mr. Luan.

The journey to turn a landfill into a park is not easy. Initially, it was difficult to mobilize people to contribute funds and efforts. However, with the perseverance, persuasion and exemplary spirit of the neighborhood staff, people have gradually understood the meaning and practical benefits of building green space.
"We campaign according to the motto "The State and the People work together". Neighborhood officials take the lead, be exemplary in contributing, and then spread to the people", Mr. Luan shared.
Many people have voluntarily contributed money, trees, and even working days to build the park together.

Ms. Le Thi Hien, Deputy Secretary of the Quarter 2 Party Cell, Long Thanh My Ward, could not hide her joy: "The most valuable thing is the consensus of the people. From the elderly to the young, everyone is enthusiastic about participating. Some people contribute ornamental plants, some help clean up, some support construction materials...".
Up to now, Quarter 2 has had two green parks built on the foundations of the previous landfills. The park on Road 1A and Road No. 3 not only brings a cool, clean green space but also becomes a meaningful community activity place for people.

"Since the park was built, people in the neighborhood have more places to exercise, have fun, and relax. The children have a safe playground, the elderly have a place to stroll and interact," Mr. Tran Van Luan said excitedly.
Ms. Le Thi Hien added: "What makes us happiest is seeing people happy and excited to have these green spaces. Many people even bring flowers to plant and take care of the park together like their common house".

The story of turning a landfill into a green park in Quarter 2 is not only the pride of the people here but also a source of inspiration to spread the spirit of "greening" to other neighborhoods in Thu Duc City.
"We are willing to share our experiences and methods so that other neighborhoods can learn and replicate this model," affirmed Mr. Ngoc Kien Cuong, Secretary of the Party Cell of Quarter 2, Long Thanh My Ward.
With the cooperation of the government and people, the "green lungs" are gradually reviving across residential areas, contributing to building a greener, cleaner, more beautiful and livable city.
Thanks to the consensus of the community, Thu Duc city has so far eliminated 87% of the garbage accumulation points. The whole city has 636/644 neighborhoods recognized as "Clean neighborhoods - hamlets, no littering on roads and canals"; 100% of wards and communes meet the standards of "No littering on roads and canals".
