Coastal landslides threaten residential areas near Vung Ang port

Ha Tinh - Through each rainy and stormy season, the sea is getting deeper, causing severe landslides, threatening residential areas in Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages, Ky Loi commune (Ky Anh town).

Landslide approaches people's house

On April 9, present at the coast of Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages, Ky Loi commune, a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper recorded that the coastline here stretching about 3km was severely eroded by many ancient wonklow trees and was only about 3-5 meters away from the people's houses.

The situation of sea erosion deep into the mainland and residential areas has made many people worried, hoping to be relocated to new places soon to avoid landslides.

Mr. Chu Van Ngung (67 years old, residing in Hai Phong 1 village) - said that the coastline was previously about 100 meters away from the current location. However, every year, many rains and big waves hit the shore, causing landslides, sweeping away many of the seaweed to block the waves. Therefore, the sea has now approached residential areas, threatening people's houses and works.

"I heard that there is a project to relocate some households here to new resettlement areas. If my house is subject to relocation, I am always ready to relocate, Mr. Ngung shared.

According to the reporter's observation, in addition to the residential area here being threatened by severe coastal erosion, the density of houses is also close together, the roads and paths are narrow. In particular, Hai Phong 1 village is still close to the Vung Ang 2 Thermal Power Plant Project which is about to come into operation, potentially affecting the environment.

Building a resettlement area to relocate 220 households

On April 9, Mr. Chu Van Quang - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ky Loi Commune (Ky Anh Town) - said that the People's Committee of Ha Tinh Province has approved the Project to build resettlement infrastructure to meet the relocation, compensation, support and resettlement needs of 220 households in Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages (phase 1). The project is invested by the People's Committee of Ky Anh town with a total investment of 70 billion VND.

The project is built in Hung Tri ward and Ky Trinh ward, Ky Anh town with a land area of 5.1 hectares, including items: leveling, roads, drainage system, water supply system, power supply system, cultural house.

According to Mr. Quang, currently Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages of Ky Loi commune (near Vung Ang port) have nearly 900 households with 2,700 people.

According to the Project on relocation and resettlement of households in Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages, all households here will be relocated to new resettlement areas.

The project has pointed out that according to the Detailed Planning of the Vung Ang - Son Duong deep-water port area approved by the Ministry of Transport in 2012, the entire area of Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2, Ky Loi commune is included in the planning.

In addition to being affected by landslides, the residential area in Hai Phong 1 village is also very close to the Vung Ang 2 Thermal Power Plant, which is about to be completed and put into operation. Photo: Tran Tuan.

In recent years, under the impact of nature, storms, floods, climate change, rising sea levels have caused serious coastal erosion in Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages of Ky Loi commune.

Therefore, it is necessary to develop a plan to relocate people from areas vulnerable to factors such as floods, landslides, and sea erosion.

"Phase 1 will prioritize relocation and resettlement for households living near the coast, affected by landslides and households in low-lying areas," Mr. Quang shared.

In the next phase, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province may approve investment in building other resettlement areas to continue relocating the remaining households in Hai Phong 1 and Hai Phong 2 villages.
