It is known that the photo contest "Portrait of a soldier" was launched by the People's Army Newspaper on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024), the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024) and the 80th anniversary of the Traditional Day of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024).
The contest was launched from October 2023 to October 2024 and received the response of many photographers, photojournalists, officers, soldiers, and workers working at agencies and units throughout the army.
The Organizing Committee also organized 8 creative trips for more than 100 photographers and photojournalists from press agencies outside the military to work at many units throughout the military, in the North and the South, with the participation of more than 100 photographers, photojournalists and collaborators from many agencies and units inside and outside the military.

According to the judges, the entries presented a new and creative perspective, comprehensively reflecting all aspects of military activities in all types of units such as: Training, combat readiness, exercises, logistics and technical support, scientific research, mass mobilization work, helping people overcome the consequences of natural disasters, storms and floods, defense diplomacy...
Many photographic works ensure timeliness while expressing artistic value and a very clear message. Many works are invested in time, composition and artistic value, realistically and vividly depicting the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers.

The contest also received 3,344 works from 450 authors working in 54 provinces and cities across the country. Through 5 rounds of judging (preliminary and final), the jury decided to select 31 outstanding works to award prizes, including:
For single photos - 1 A prize was awarded to author Nguyen Manh Quan, 2 B prizes (Tran Thanh Dat and Nguyen Van Ban), 5 C prizes (Truong The Cau, Do Duy Liem, Ngo Huy Tinh, Hoang Kim Thanh and Tran Duy Lan) and 10 Encouragement prizes (Phung Duc Dung, Tran Duy Tinh, Nguyen Duy Hau, Nguyen Van Dinh...).
For photo series - 1 A prize was awarded to author Pham Bang, 2 B prizes (Nguyen Anh Tuan and Le Huu Nghia), 5 C prizes (Hoang Giang Huy, Ninh Manh Thang, Vu Ngoc Hoang and Duong Duc Kien) and 5 Encouragement prizes (Nguyen Le Tien, Nguyen Vu Hau, Bien Van Cuong, Dang Ke Dong and Nguyen Manh Quan).
Accordingly, each author winning the A prize will receive 15 VND; the B prize - 10 million VND/prize; the C prize - 5 million VND/prize and the Encouragement prize - 3 million VND/prize.
