According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, last night (May 6), there were localized thunderstorms in the Northwest region.
The Northern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An from the afternoon of May 7 to the morning of May 8, are forecast to have rain, moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms with rainfall of 20 - 40mm, locally heavy to very heavy rain over 100mm.
The area from Ha Tinh to Hue city from the evening of May 7 to May 8, is forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10 - 30mm, locally heavy rain over 70mm.
The Mekong Delta region in the late afternoon and evening of May 7, is forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10 - 20mm, locally heavy rain over 50mm.
The meteorological agency recommends that in thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. Warning level of natural disaster risk due to tornadoes, lightning, hail is level 1.
Rainstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind can affect agricultural production, causing trees to fall, damage to houses, traffic works, and infrastructure. Localized heavy rains are likely to cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.
Regarding the rainfall trend in May, the total rainfall nationwide is generally lower than the multi-year average by 15 - 30%; especially in the Northeast and South regions, it is generally approximately equal to the multi-year average of the same period.
Nationwide, there is a possibility of widespread showers and thunderstorms, with rain concentrated more in the Northern region.
The southwest monsoon in the South is likely to operate from about the second half of May, causing increased showers and thunderstorms in the Central Highlands and Southern regions. Therefore, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern regions appears later than the average of many years.
According to multi-year average data, the rainy season in the Central Highlands region is around the last week of April, the first week of May; in the Southern region it is around the first half of May.
