Don't let our children just see bears on books

Son La Police discovered a case of illegal trading of four Asiatic black bears and one bear gallbladder in the area.

On July 28, Son La Provincial Police said that they had initiated a criminal case and prosecuted the defendant Vi Van Nhoa (born 1987), residing in Van Ho commune, to investigate the act of illegally trading endangered and rare animals.

Four bear hands being cut shows that a bear was killed or had its body parts removed. Each bottle of bear bile wine is cruel to a rare animal that is decreasing in the wild.

Recently, local police forces have continuously discovered and handled cases related to wildlife protection.

At the beginning of July 2026, Lao Cai Provincial Police prosecuted a person transporting hired bear paws. Previously, at the end of June 2026, a man in Ninh Binh was also prosecuted for storing a bottle of alcohol soaking bear paws.

The law has spoken out and functional agencies are acting drastically, but if the consumption market still exists, similar cases will not be able to stop.

A sad reality is that there are still people who spend a lot of money to buy products from wild animals with a blind belief that they are precious medicines, items that show class or wealth and style.

It is the needs of the rich that have nurtured cross-border hunting, transportation and trading lines.

The rarer it is, the higher the price, the more valuable it is, the more hunted it is. Rare animals gradually disappear from the forests.

Nature, including rare animals and plants, is valued by money, greed will have no stopping point if the law is not deterrent enough and community awareness does not change.

Each animal species holds a position in the ecosystem, when one link is removed, the natural balance will be broken.

A forest without large animals will gradually become lifeless, reduce its regeneration capacity and resistance to climate change.

The damage is not only the extinction of some species, but humans will suffer the consequences of the ecosystem imbalance in nature.

Therefore, wildlife protection is not just a story of the forest protection sector or the police force, but also the responsibility of the whole society.

The prosecutions in Son La, Lao Cai or Ninh Binh are a warning to those who still disregard the law.

However, what is more necessary is to propagate about environmental protection, how to make each person feel ashamed when using products from wild animals.

If we are not responsible from today, then the clear risk is that one day, our children and grandchildren will only see bears, tigers, langurs and many other rare animals on books or on TV screens.
