Doctors of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery, E Hospital have just received and successfully treated a 24-year-old female patient with late complications after 3 years of injecting "Tai Phat" plastic filler at a spa.
A female patient in Hanoi said that she had performed ear filler injections at a spa with an unknown address about 3 years ago to create a "Buddha ear" shape. For a long time after the injection, the patient did not record any abnormal signs. However, recently, the ear area began to show swelling, redness and gradually increasing pain.
When admitted to Hospital E, the patient was in a state of hot, swollen, red, and painful ear area, with signs of inflammation and fluid buildup. Immediately after that, doctors conducted examination, tests and diagnosed the patient with inflammatory complications, abscesses after ear filler injection.
Faced with the complicated developments of the inflammation, doctors decided to perform emergency surgery for treatment. The patient was incised to drain the inflammation, clean the infected tissue, remove the damaged tissue and filler of unknown origin. At the same time, the patient was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and wound care to control infection, limit the risk of spread and maximize the preservation of the ear structure.
After treatment, the patient's condition improved significantly, swelling decreased, the wound progressed well, no more pus, health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital.
According to MSc. Dr. Dong Ha Trung - Department of Plastic Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery, E Hospital, swelling and inflammation appearing after many years of filler injections is a sign of dangerous late complications. The cause may stem from latent infection, late immune response or use of poor quality fillers that do not completely dissolve.
Doctors analyze that bacteria can create biological membranes surrounding the filler block and exist silently for a long time. When the body loses immunity due to stress, disease or hormonal changes, bacteria will break out and cause inflammation. In addition, the body can also suddenly recognize fillers as foreign objects, thereby triggering an excretion reaction after viral fevers or vaccinations.
In some cases, fillers containing liquid silicone or insoluble bioplastic particles can exist permanently in the body, causing granulomas and complications over the years. Over time, fillers can also shift from their original position, compressing surrounding soft tissues and blood vessels, leading to prolonged swelling.
MSc. Dr. Dong Ha Trung warned that many people mistakenly believe that filler injections are a simple, low-risk procedure. However, if performed at establishments that do not ensure expertise, use products of unknown origin or inject incorrectly, patients may face many dangerous complications such as infection, blockage of blood vessels, tissue necrosis or deformation of the injection area.
