Most cases are diagnosed before the age of 12, but sometimes symptoms are not obvious and diagnosis is made later in life.
Dr. Shaunak Ajinkya shared that the cause of ADHD has not been well known but may be genetic.
Research has shown that in some patients, some brain regions may be smaller, while others may be larger.
“ADHD in adults is a complex and often misunderstood condition that requires a sensitive approach to diagnosis and treatment as it can impact a person’s work performance, personal relationships and mental health,” said Dr Shaunak Ajinkya.
What are the symptoms of ADHD in adults?
These symptoms are different from those in children and include difficulty maintaining attention, forgetfulness, poor organizational skills, impulsivity, and difficulty completing tasks, according to Dr. Shaunak Ajinkya.
These symptoms often lead to chronic unpunctuality, procrastination, poor time management, and difficulty managing responsibilities. Unlike children, hyperactivity in adults often manifests as restlessness or an inability to relax rather than overt physical hyperactivity.
On the professional front, many people may struggle to meet deadlines, multitask, and maintain attention during long meetings or assignments. This can lead to missed goals, job instability, and frustration despite high potential.
On an individual level, symptoms can put a strain on relationships due to forgetfulness, inattention, and impulsive decision making.
While ADHD is often associated with childhood, if left undiagnosed, it can persist into adulthood for many individuals, notes Dr. Shaunak Ajinkya. Therefore, it is important to adopt strategies to manage ADHD symptoms and change thinking to positive ones.
