When the summer weather becomes hot, fruits are not only a snack but also help the body feel better. Watermelon and cantaloupe are two popular choices thanks to their sweet, cool, easy-to-eat and easy-to-find taste. However, each type has different nutritional characteristics, suitable for each specific need.
According to Ms. Edwina Raj, Head of Clinical Nutrition & Diet Services, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore (India), both cantaloupe and watermelon are summer fruits, but the health benefits they bring are not the same. Therefore, choosing which type is better depends on each person's use goals and physical condition.
Watermelon stands out for its very high water content, accounting for about 90–92%. This helps this fruit become a suitable choice to hydrate and cool the body on hot sunny days or after exercise. In addition, watermelon also contains antioxidants such as lycopene, which is beneficial for the heart and skin. Some studies show that people who eat watermelon often have higher levels of potassium and magnesium, contributing to electrolyte balance in the body.
Meanwhile, cantaloupe has an advantage in terms of micronutrient content. According to Ms. Edwina Raj, cantaloupe provides a lot of vitamin A and vitamin C, supporting vision and strengthening the immune system. These are essential nutrients, especially during periods when the body is easily tired due to hot weather.
An important difference is that cantaloupe contains fiber. This ingredient helps the digestive system work more efficiently and create a feeling of fullness for a long time. Therefore, cantaloupe may be suitable for people who are controlling their diet or want to limit snacking during the day.
Regarding the choice, if the goal is to cool down and quickly replenish water, watermelon is the appropriate option. Conversely, if it is necessary to supplement vitamins and support digestion, cantaloupe will be a more reasonable choice.
Both types of fruits are low in calories, suitable for weight-controlled diets. However, users should still eat in moderation to avoid consuming too much natural sugar.
No one is completely better. Combining watermelon and cantaloupe in a summer diet is a simple way to take advantage of both benefits, both helping the body stay hydrated and supplementing essential nutrients.
